I knew that the main reason for conflict over the treaty was the differences between the two translations, however, until reading this I was unaware of the specifications of these differences and their severity. "The purpose of the treaty embodied in the first article was the cession of chiefly sovereignty over New Zealand to the Queen of England"(pp. 91 of cited work 1) this was clearly explained in the English version however, the Māori translation is not only much briefer but also the word 'sovereignty' is replaced by māori word 'kawanatanga' which translates to governance, this, whether it be a deliberate mistranslation by Henry Williams or not, mislead the māori people as to what they were agreeing to in the treaty.

At the age of 12 a family member researched our family tree in detail and taught me about some of my ancestors, one of which was Tamati Waka Nene who I was told was an influential chief in the signing of the treaty of Waitangi. I became aware of the lack of detail taught about the treaty of Waitangi in school, as despite doing projects on the treaty most years up until that point I had never heard his name and when I asked about him my teacher was unable to tell me what he did and I was left to research this on my own.
